#SpeakUp: Sheffcare

The second of this year's #SpeakUp grants has now been published. Find out what people living in Sheffcare care homes, along with their friends and families, have to say about the ongoing impact of Covid-19 in care homes.

For this project, Sheffcare spoke with people about the impact of Covid-19, restricted visiting, and ongoing lockdowns in care homes. They heard from 24 residents, 32 friends & family members, and 8 staff members & volunteers.

We hope that the feedback shared during these conversations will be valuable learning for other care homes, as well as policy-makers and decision-makers.

Key findings

Sheffcare's #SpeakUp report covers a range of topics important to care home residents and their families, including:

  • How care homes handled the pandemic, including relationships with care homes and staff, and how policies were implemented.

  • Experiences of visiting during Covid, including use of technology, window visits and pod visits.

  • The impact of lockdowns, including the experience of moving into a care home during the pandemic, concerns about decreased physical health and mobility, the emotional/mental health results of isolation, and the specific impact on people living with dementia.

  • The ongoing impact of Covid in care homes, including a desire for increased flexibility in policy-making, and the long-term impact of Covid on the care home environment.
