What is needed to improve care for those with long term conditions?
We asked what key issues people were facing, and what could be done to support them. To hear a range of perspectives, we were joined by representatives from:
- Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SHASBAH)
- Sheffield ME, Fibromyalgia and Long Covid Group
- Burton Street Foundation
- Diabetes UK Sheffield
- Sheffield Carers Centre
Gill Furniss, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, heard their concerns and is now better equipped - with real experiences from local people - to share these issues in Parliament.
What did we discuss?
There was a rich and varied discussion, acknowledging that different people - and people with different conditions - require different support. However the following broad themes were drawn out of the discussion:
- The importance of specialist clinics and support
- Transport as a major barrier
- Social care not working well or being under strain
- Personal finances for those living with long term conditions and for carers
- National policies impacting health and care, and how we could influence these
