What is needed to improve care for those with long term conditions?

In February we hosted a roundtable conversation with Gill Furniss MP. It was attended by people with personal and professional experience of living with long term conditions, or caring for people with them.

We asked what key issues people were facing, and what could be done to support them. To hear a range of perspectives, we were joined by representatives from:

  • Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SHASBAH)
  • Sheffield ME, Fibromyalgia and Long Covid Group
  • Burton Street Foundation
  • Diabetes UK Sheffield
  • Sheffield Carers Centre

Gill Furniss, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, heard their concerns and is now better equipped - with real experiences from local people - to share these issues in Parliament.

What did we discuss?

There was a rich and varied discussion, acknowledging that different people - and people with different conditions - require different support. However the following broad themes were drawn out of the discussion:

  • The importance of specialist clinics and support
  • Transport as a major barrier
  • Social care not working well or being under strain
  • Personal finances for those living with long term conditions and for carers
  • National policies impacting health and care, and how we could influence these
