Help with hospital travel expenses
If you have been referred to a specialist or a hospital for NHS treatment or tests and you are on benefits you could claim travel costs under the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS). You also may be able to claim back travel expenses on journeys to and from the hospital when escorting your child. Help with your fares- Advice from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
If you are entitled to certain means tested benefits you may be able to get help with your train or bus fares or car mileage, including a £2.00 contribution to car parking at the multi-storey car park at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The method of payment for travel expenses is in the form of cash and BACs (payment direct into your account).
You are advised to claim any travel expenses in cash at the Cashiers window within the three month period. The Cashiers office is situated on Level B at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
You will be required to show your most up-to-date benefit letter along with your attendance certificate which you can collect from the outpatient clinic. It is essential that you produce your bus tickets and train tickets as evidence of the amount.
Car mileage will be worked out by the use of AA Auto route.

Are you eligible for support from the Patient Transport Service?
The Patient Transport Service (PTS) provides NHS-funded transport for eligible people who are unable to travel to their healthcare appointments by any other means due to their need for a specially adapted vehicle, specialist equipment or the skills of Yorkshire Ambulance Service trained staff during the journey.

Sheffield Community Transport (SCT)
Sheffield Community Transport (SCT) is a paid service that provides transport services for people who find it difficult to use regular transport.

Sheffield Travel Support (STS)
STS is a paid service providing travel support to people with learning disabilities. They usually drive customers to their destination but also offer accompanied journeys on public transport. The service is for anyone who finds taxis or public transport difficult or feels anxious traveling with strangers. Disabled Person’s Travel Pass
A Disabled Person’s Travel Pass is free and is provided by Travel South Yorkshire. The pass, enables you to travel for free at any time in South Yorkshire on:
- Local buses
- Trams
- Trains
- Northern Rail services between South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire
You can also travel for free on buses across England during off-peak times. Off-peak times are:
- 9:30am to 11pm on weekdays
- All day on weekends and Bank Holidays

Travelling With a Carer
If you qualify for a pass and are in receipt of the Higher Rate Care component of DLA, Enhanced Daily Living component of PIP or Higher Rate Attendance Allowance, then your pass will allow one carer to travel with you for free.
