#SpeakUp: United Women's Affiliation

The latest #SpeakUp report explores the experiences of African women living in underprivileged communities in Sheffield. Read more about what United Women's Affiliation found out.

For this project, United Women's Affiliation (UWA) put on a wide range of information events, discussions, and activities. They wanted to find out more about the barriers facing the women they support when it comes to accessing healthcare.

Key findings

UWA heard about a range of issues facing African women in Sheffield when they need to access healthcare. These include:

  • Medication - people feel they are prescribed medication too quickly, and medication isn't always explained well
  • Access to interpreters - appropriate interpreters aren't always provided, and when there's a language barrier people need more time to talk
  • Access to GPs and dentists - it can be hard to get an appointment, and some people don't feel listened to by health professionals
  • Finance - there's a lack of clarity about NHS dental and pharmacy charges

They also heard about other things that impact on people's health and wellbeing, such as housing, access to green space, and the need for education and support.
