#SpeakUp: Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group

The first of this year's #SpeakUp grants has been published. Find out what people living with ME & Fibromyalgia have to say about their care.

For this project, Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia group heard from 154 people living with these long term conditions. They found people faced a strenuous battle, from diagnosis through to support.

Key findings

The report's key findings are based on the experiences of people living with ME and Fibromyalgia in and around Sheffield. They fall under the following categories:

  • Accessibility of healthcare services - including memory and cognitive functions making access harder, transport issues and physical accessibility of healthcare settings.
  • Quality of healthcare services - including misunderstanding and disbelief from professionals, difficulties getting symptoms investigated, and ineffective treatment.
  • Awareness and provision of social care services - including a lack of awareness from the community, a strenuous application process, and sometimes being unable to implement the support that is awarded.
