#SpeakUp 2021 - Autism Hope

Autism Hope are a support group for parents and carers of children with autism. They are based in North Sheffield and meet weekly, providing a space for friendship, understanding and support

Our #SpeakUp small grants scheme awards funding to local community, voluntary, or not-for-profit groups, enabling them to engage with their communities about what matters to them.

Navigating support for children with autism - how can families' experiences be improved?

Autism Hope spoke to the parents of 37 children with autism and/or other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

They wanted to understand people's experiences of:

  • Getting a diagnosis
  • Accessing support from services for their children
  • Accessing support for themselves as a parent-carer

We heard that getting the right support in place can feel like a "battle" and that parent-carers fear being judged when they reach out for help. We also heard about experiences of support from a whole range of specialist services, including Ryegate Children's Centre, Speech and Language Therapy, and the Autism Team.

We hope that learning from these experiences - both positive and negative - will help to improve and streamline support for families in Sheffield.
