VCF Forum: How can the voluntary sector strengthen local government scrutiny?

For our next VCF Forum, Healthwatch Sheffield are working in partnership with Sheffield City Council to discuss Scrutiny. Scrutiny is an essential part of modern government. It helps to ensure that government is effective and accountable.

The central purpose of scrutiny is to hold decision makers to account, examine services provided by the Council and its partners, as well as to carry out in-depth reviews into specific service areas. The aim of these scrutiny functions is to continuously improve the delivery of local public services to residents.

Both overview and scrutiny committees and local Healthwatch have powers that can be used to hold commissioners and providers to account. This forum will provide an opportunity to find out how Healthwatch contributes to the scrutiny process and opportunities for the wider voluntary and community sector to bring the voices of local people to the fore.

Key points of the forum will be:

-Overview of the Scrutiny Committees in Sheffield and how they work
-Meet the Chairs of the Healthier Communities and Adult Social Care Scrutiny and Policy Development Committee and the Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee
-Find out how the voluntary and community sector can engage effectively with the scrutiny process

The panel will include:

Denise Fox, Chair, Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee
Pat Midgley, Chair Healthier Communities and Adult Social Care Scrutiny and Policy Development Committee
