#SpeakUp: CABS

The latest #SpeakUp report explores the experiences of South Asian men working as taxi drivers in Sheffield. Read more about what CABS (Champions in Achieving Better health in Sheffield) found out.

For this project, CABS spoke to 66 men (42 through a survey and 24 through discussion groups). They told us about their current health, concerns for their health in the future, and what would help them access services and other support for their health and wellbeing.

Key findings

CABS found out about a range of barriers that make it more difficult for people to improve their health and wellbeing. These include:

  • The system for booking and attending appointments (especially in GP practices) is a particular barrier for taxi drivers who are self-employed and work long hours
  • Mental and emotional health are concerns for people, with high levels of stress and social isolation
  • Information and support about healthy eating isn't culturally appropriate - with ingredient and meal guidance that don't feel relevant, and a lack of language options
  • People would like support to access sport and exercise opportunities - especially social ones - to help them keep well

We have sent this report, including our recommendations to improve services for this community, to decision-makers in the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Public Health at the Council. We will update this page with their response.
